Overview

This year we will be Back country skiing from resorts in the Aosta valley and we intend to spend at least one night in a mountain refuge as part of our tours.

Ski Touring in Champoluc

Ski touring in the Monte Rosa massif offers one of the Alps’ most dramatic high‑mountain experiences, with vast glaciers, towering 4,000‑metre peaks, and long, remote valleys that feel far wilder than many better‑known resorts. The terrain ranges from gentle glacier approaches to steep, technical ascents requiring crampons and ice axes, making it a destination that rewards strong, experienced ski mountaineers. Multi‑day hut‑to‑hut routes—such as those crossing Colle del Turlo or reaching Monte Moro—immerse you in the high alpine environment and provide access to long powder descents framed by the immense walls of Monte Rosa.

Champoluc, in the Val d’Ayas, is one of the prime gateways to this terrain. Sitting at the western edge of the Monterosa area, it combines a quiet, authentic village atmosphere with fast access to high‑altitude slopes and touring routes. From Champoluc or nearby Frachey, skiers can quickly reach the upper bowls and ridgelines that lead toward the glacier basins beneath Monte Rosa. The area is known for its uncrowded slopes, reliable snow, and sweeping views of the Matterhorn and surrounding 4,000‑metre peaks—an ideal base for both day tours and longer mountaineering itineraries.
